Hofmann, Josef - Vol.9 - Miscellaneous Recordings with Interviews About Hofmann - newly mastered transfers of the three wax cylinders from 1896 & several alternative takes of Columbia and Brunswick recordings & Cadillac Hour program from 1936 mit Beethovens Mondschein-Sonate. Half of the set will feature a collection of recorded interviews, conducted mostly by Gregor Benko. In these, which date back to the 1970s, we hear fascinating commentary by Rudolph Ganz, Jorge Bolet, Charles Rosen, Gian-Carlo Menotti, Glenn Gould, Constance Keene, Nella Rubinstein, Ruth Steinway, and Hofmann’s son, Anton, speaking candidly about Hofmann the pianist and Hofmann the man. One interview, with a minor pianist whose name will be unfamiliar to most, Thadeus Sadlowski, is both fascinating and funny (while most of them are anything but funny.) Choosing these interviews from the large number that Gregor Benko collected and recorded, then editing them For content, has taken hundreds of hours of intense work, and we feel that they make a fitting finale to the complete Josef Hofmann CD series. McCormack, John - A Star Ascending - This four-CD set includes operatic arias, Irish ballads, and popular songs from McCormack’s Odeon recordings dating from 1906–1909, as well as nine cylinder recordings of 1906 made For the Edison Bell and Russell Hunting companies. These early recordings are sometimes dismissed by admirers of McCormack and collectors of vocal art because they do not capture him at his artistic zenith. Kapell, William (Klavier) - Broadcasts and Concert Performances, 1944-1952 - William Kapell, 1922-1953, is a name that still resonates with pianophiles more than 60 years after his tragic death in an airplane crash near San Francisco. We are pleased to announce a three-CD set of Kappell performances that have never been issued on CD. In fact more than two thirds of the set is previously unpublished in any form. Among the highlights are two 1952 half-hour studio broadcasts from New York's WQXR that have only recently come to light. The set will also include a 1949 performance of Richard Strauss's Burleske, a 1951 performance of Debussy's Suite Bergamasque, and Schumann's Piano Quintet in E-flat with the Fine Arts Quartet dating from the same year. The booklet will include several photos that have not previously been published and an unpublished piece on Kapell by pianist Raymond Lewenthal, 1923-1988.

Koczalski, Raoul von (Klavier) - The Complete Raoul von Koczalski Vol. 1: Polydor Recordings 1924 – 1928 - Raoul von Koczlaski was born in 1885, and before he was six years old he caught the attention of Anton Rubinstein and music critic Edward Hanslick. At six, he was a pupil of Liszt-student Ludwig Marek and was studying composition with Henryk Jarecki. At the age of seven, Koczalski’s life was changed; he began studying with Chopin-student Karol Mikuli. This relationship defined Koczalski’s musical destiny as a pre-eminent interpreter of Chopin. The first impression of Koczalski’s playing is often one of the fluency and grace of his execution, coupled with his subtlety of phrasing and smooth legato, but what one is often left with is his use of rubato. Landmarks of Recorded Pianism, Vol.1 - This release features a collection of what might be called piano orphans: commercial and non-commercial recordings of great pianists that simply have never found their way onto compact disc. Among these treasures are fifteen minutes of Dinu Lipatti playing Scarlatti and Brahms that have only recently surfaced; an unpublished disc of Alfred Cortot playing the “Russian Dance” from Petroushka; and previously unpublished excerpts of the Tchaikovsky first piano concerto played by Vladimir Horowitz with the Philadelphia Orchestra, recorded during a 1932 concert conducted by Fritz Reiner and recorded as an experiment by the Bell Telephone Laboratory. This is Horowitz's earliest known concert performance and is in amazing sound for that time. It is unfortunate that the entire concerto was not recorded, but hearing these excerpts will be a revelation for Horowitz fans. Also included are live concerto performances by Lev Puishnov and Guiomar Novaes. We feel certain that piano enthusiasts worldwide will treasure this 2-CD set as nothing like it has been heard since Gregor Benko produced his acclaimed Landmarks of Recorded Pianism LP forty years ago
